Iceland has increased the number of delivery slots it can offer as demand has rocketed during the UK's lockdown. The supermarket says it has added 3,000 new staff since August 2019 after demand.

Instead of rushing around, playing trolley wars in the supermarket, many people look to get their Christmas food shop delivered instead to save the stress of it all.

If you’re shopping in store, there are extended Christmas opening hours.

Supermarket Christmas delivery slots 2020

To make sure you’re fully prepared, here’s when you’ll need to book in your Christmas supermarket delivery slot.

This is whether you’re planning to have your Christmas food shop delivered or you want to book a collection slot for click and collect.

We cover all the major online supermarket delivery details, when you’re able to place your order, the costs for the delivery, plus let you know when the supermarket will take payment for your order.

Tesco Christmas delivery slots 2020

If you don’t have a Tesco Delivery Saver, you can start booking slots for Tesco delivery 3 weeks before the day of delivery or collection.

This year, slots have booked up really quickly, and there aren’t very many left (if any).

If there isn’t a 1 hour fixed slot, check to see if there is a flexi saver slot instead. This will mean you’ll be given a slot on a day, rather than get to pick a time.

Delivery on 24th December is only available in selected stores, so check before you get your hopes up.

Depending on what slot you pick, delivery will cost £2 – £7.

The minimum order is £40, but if you need to spend less a £4 basket charge will be added.

Even though there aren’t many delivery slots, there are still plenty for Click+Collect.

Same day collection is available in some locations. You will need to spend over £25, and there’s no minimum basket charge.

Tesco Click+Collect costs £1.50, and you still have the flexibility to amend your order no later than 11:45 pm on the night before your Click+Collect date.

If you have a Delivery Saver pass, then you can get access earlier to festive bookings, but this may not help you this year as the slots are mostly gone.

You can get a free trial of the Delivery Saver to see if you like it. However, you will need to be on a paid plan before 25th November if you want early access to the Christmas delivery slots.

A Tesco Delivery Saver pass is a win-win! Yes, you need to pay, but if it doesn’t save you money versus what you’d usually pay for delivery they give you a refund for the difference.

You’re even able to use your Clubcard points to get a Delivery Saver Plan, where 50p in vouchers is worth £1.50 to spend on the plan.

When will Tesco take the payment for online shopping?

While you’re ordering 3 weeks in advance, it can be a worry about when you’ll pay.

When you first place your order, Tesco needs to validate your card and will pre-authorise £2 from your account.

What Time Do Iceland Delivery Slots Become Available

On the day of delivery (or click and collect), the full amount will be taken from your bank (and the £2 pre-authorisation will be removed).

Iceland Christmas delivery slots

Iceland dates for Christmas delivery have not been released as yet. They are currently showing dates for around a week in advance.

I have reached out to Iceland to find out when Christmas bookings will open and will update this soon.

With Iceland, you’re able to get free next day delivery when you spend over £35.

They’ve got 1,000s of current delivery slots available one week in advance.

Also, remember that when you shop in Iceland, you’ve got the chance to win the cost of your shop back.

When does Iceland take the payment?

Iceland will pre-authorise and reserve for the full value of your order as soon as you checkout. The money will be held to one side by your bank.

The actual payment will then get taken on the date of your delivery.

Morrisons Christmas delivery slots

You’re able to start booking your Morrisons Christmas delivery slots.

Delivery slots are open between 20th and 22nd December, and you will need to spend a minimum of £40.

You’ll pay from £1.50 through to £5 as a delivery depending on what slot you want to book.

When you’ve got your slot, it’s reserved for 60 minutes, so be sure to add foods and check out or you’ll possibly need to book a new one. (Remember, you can always edit your shop later on).

A Delivery pass can cost you from £5 a month with Morrisons.

Morrisons is also selling food boxes with next day delivery which could be an option too.

When will the payment be taken?

Morrisons will reserve £1 from your account to make sure the payment card is valid.

The full amount for your food shop will be taken within two days of delivery.

Asda Xmas delivery slots

You can start booking your Christmas delivery slot with Asda up until 24th December. There are still some slots left, but a lot have gone.

Delivery will cost £6. If you’re buying less than £40 of food for delivery, you need to pay a minimum basket charge of £3.

There are still 1 hour Click & Collect slots available on some days.

Asda Click & Collect can be free, and you need to spend a minimum of £25.

When is the payment taken?

Asda takes a pre-authorisation amount of 1p to check your card works, although you won’t pay that as it’s just held back.

The full amount will be taken either on the day of your delivery or collection, or the day before.

If you choose same-day delivery or collection, they will authorise your card a few hours before your slot time.

Sainsbury’s Christmas delivery slots

Slots for Sainsbury’s Christmas delivery are bookable from 29 November.

Depending on when you want your food delivered, there are different booking dates.

Fresh turkeys will be available to add to your basket from 20 December, and fresh desserts can be added to your basket from 21 December.

You’re able to book your slot, checkout, but then update your basket (and remember to check out again) right up until 11 pm the day before your delivery is due.

You’ll look to pay from £1 to £6.50 as a delivery charge depending on the day and time you want your food to arrive.

Click & Collect 1 hour slots will also be available.

When is the payment taken?

Online payments for Sainsbury’s will be taken when your order is ready for delivery.

Waitrose Christmas delivery slots

Delivery slots for Christmas are open right now at Waitrose, but many slots are already booked up for up to Christmas Eve.

For collection, you can book free collection with no minimum spend.

You need to spend a minimum of £40 to get food delivered from Waitrose, but you won’t need to pay a delivery charge.

It’s not necessarily a skint person’s supermarket option, but there are some Waitrose discount codes about, which will bring the cost of your shop down.

When is the payment taken?

Your payment card won’t be charged until your order is packed and goes through the checkout in store on the day of delivery or collection.

Ocado Christmas delivery slots

Delivery slots for Ocado (in my area anyway) are pretty much all gone!

They may release more slots in early December for delivery between 20th and 24th December.

When is the payment taken?

Payment for your food shop from Ocado isn’t taken until after it has been delivered.

However, they will take a pre-authorised payment a day or so before the delivery. This means you will need to have the full amount in your account a few days ahead.

Supermarket Christmas delivery tips

If you’re new to online shopping, or are a pro, and want to make sure things go as smoothly as possible, here are some tips to make sure you save both time and money on your supermarket Christmas delivery.

1. Don’t put it off

The slots can go QUICK.

Last year, some of the slots for Tesco Christmas deliveries sold out in minutes! And, even this year, many slots are gone at other supermarkets.

Even if you don’t know what the full shop is, book a slot, add a few things to your basket to get it booked in. Then come back later to amend the shop and get everything you need.

Supermarkets allow you to make edits your order before the delivery, but check where you’ll be shopping for when their cut off is.

2. Get cashback

3. Don’t get it delivered at the 11th hour

You will want your food to be as fresh as possible, which is why I understand people want it delivered at the last minute.

However, if there are items out of stock, you may get substitutes that aren’t suitable. And I’ve heard some amazingly-silly supermarket sub-stories in my time!

If you have your food delivered a few days before Christmas, it gives you a chance to get to the shop if you need to grab anything else.

But, it won’t be that much if a panic as most supermarkets (and Express/Local stores) are open on Christmas Eve anyway, but will close early.

Also, keep in mind, if there’s adverse weather, it may cause delays to your food delivery.

Whether you shop at Asda, Iceland, Morrisons, Ocado, Tesco, Sainsbury's or Waitrose, we reveal how to find the cheapest supermarket online delivery deals, including the price of monthly passes. Some even offer free deliveries!

Cheap online supermarket deliveries

If you regularly do your grocery shopping online, it's vital you track down the cheapest supermarket delivery deals or you'll end up wasting a load of cash.

Our guide explains how to do just that and covers all the main supermarkets, including Tesco, Sainsbury's, Ocado and Iceland.

But before your scroll to your favourite store, please note some supermarkets have reported a sharp spike in demand for online deliveries due to the latest lockdown, so you may have to wait longer to book a slot at some stores.

The increased demand is being driven by people worried about stock shortages seen when lockdown was first introduced last March, as well as more demand from clinically vulnerable people who have been asked to shield once more.

While we can't help you jump the queue, you can at least ensure you pay the lowest possible price for your delivery, whenever that may be.

Asda delivery costs

Minimum order: £40

Delivery cost: £1-£6.50

Cheapest delivery slots: Monday to Thursday afternoons and evenings

Time slots: two hours

Regular Asda shopper? Grocery Delivery Passes entitle you to free delivery anytime for specific days, but new delivery passes are no longer on sale at the time of writing.

Asda is unable to confirm when delivery passes will go back on sale. We’ll update this article if Asda gets in touch with any new updates.

When delivery passes were available, shoppers could get an Anytime Delivery Pass, which was available for 12 months. You had to pay £5 a month for 12 months or a £55 one-off payment, or alternatively, you could get a six-month pass for £35 (or six £6 monthly instalments).

There was also a midweek 12-month pass for deliveries on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, which would have set you back £24.

Asda has promised that if your Delivery Pass didn't save you more than you would have spent on standard delivery charges, it will give you an eVoucher for the difference.

Iceland delivery costs

Minimum order: £25

Cost: £2 delivery charge for orders over £25 but less than £35 (free delivery for orders over £35)

Cheapest delivery slots: you only pay for delivery if you spend less than £35

Time slots: two hours

Iceland doesn’t sell delivery passes but does offer a Bonus Card, which will give you access to exclusive offers.

Once you've registered your card, you can load money onto it and Iceland will top up every £20 with £1, effectively a boost of up to 5%.

Iceland will also provide free delivery on spends over £25 to Bonus Cardholders – but only when you pay in store.

Morrisons delivery costs

Minimum order: £40

Cost: 99p-£6.90

Cheapest delivery slots: afternoons and evenings, Tuesday-Thursday

Time slots: One hour

Regular Morrisons shopper? A Delivery Pass will entitle you to free delivery anytime for specified periods.

The anytime pass, which covers deliveries any day of the week, is available for a month (£8), for six months (£40) or annually (£65).

There's also a mid-week pass, which you can use for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday deliveries. Monthly (£5), six-month (£20) and annual (£35) passes are available.

If your Delivery Pass ends up costing more than standard delivery charges, Morrisons will give you a refund.

You can also get a Morrisons More Card to earn points, which you can redeem at the supermarket.

Ocado delivery costs

Minimum order: £40

Cost: £2.99-£6.99 or free with spend over £75 for certain orders

Cheapest delivery slots: early morning or late evening

Time slots: One hour

Ocado has paused its Smart Pass and there's no confirmation when they'll be back on sale.

The Smart Pass entitles you to no extra delivery charges, lets you save at least 10% on selected items and offers access to exclusive sales among other benefits. Delivery charges apply as normal during Christmas week, but Smart Pass holders get priority.

Sainsbury’s delivery costs

Minimum order: £25

Cost: £1-£7 or free delivery with spend over £100 for orders delivered between Monday-Thursday after 2pm

Cheapest delivery slots: Tuesdays and Wednesdays (afternoons and evenings)

Time slots: One hour

If you shop at Sainsbury's, you've got a choice between two delivery passes, but you’ll need to spend at least £40 per shop.

The Midweek Delivery Pass covers deliveries on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and is available for three months (£10), six months (£18) and 12 months (£30).

The Anytime Delivery Pass covers deliveries any day of the week, and costs £20 for three months, £35 for six months and £60 for 12 months.

Sainsbury’s will send you a voucher to cover any difference if you haven’t saved money with a Delivery Pass.

Get a Nectar card to earn points, which can be redeemed at Sainsbury’s, as well as 500 other brands.

Tesco delivery costs

Minimum order: £40

Delivery cost: £4.50 (or £5.50 for orders from Customer Fulfilment Centres) + £4 if you spend under £40

Time slots: One hour (but you can save money by opting for a four-hour window)

Unfortunately, Tesco has paused new registrations for its Delivery Saver pass.

“Since the start of the coronavirus outbreak, we’ve worked very hard to increase our online capacity and have more than doubled our slots each week,” said a spokesperson for Tesco.

“We continue to offer priority access to over 600,000 of our most vulnerable customers.

“We’ve temporarily paused new sign-ups for Delivery Saver so that we can support existing and vulnerable customers given the high demand for online slots.”

When the Delivery Saver pass was available, you paid £7.99 for one month or £47.94 for six months for one delivery a day with a minimum order of £40.

There was also the option of paying £6.99 a month for six months or its cheaper midweek delivery saver pass, which cost £3.99 a month.

Similar to some rival schemes, you got a grocery eCoupon if you didn’t save money with the Delivery Saver plan.

Don’t forget Tesco’s Clubcard scheme, where you earn points that can be turned into vouchers for shopping or days out.

Waitrose delivery costs

Minimum order: £40

Cost: free

Top tips for saving on all online grocery shopping

1. Sign up for emails with all of the supermarket websites, even if you don't intend to shop with them straight away.

Like all retailers, supermarkets often send out discount codes (such as 15% off your shopping) to entice us to shop with them, which will usually more than cover the delivery charge.

2. Switch around. Never use the same delivery service twice in a row. Supermarkets tend to ignore loyal customers and send their best deals to those who haven't used their service for a while – make them stew and watch the offers roll in!

3. Complain, complain, complain. If there is anything at all wrong with your shopping (late delivery, damaged fruit or vegetables, items too close to their sell-by date, dented tins) don't just accept it, phone up and tell them.

Most customer service managers are keen that you enjoy the service and will often replace or simply refund your money, straight away.

What's more, depending on the problem many will issue credit notes too, giving money off your next delivery (which may cover that delivery fee!).

4. Check prices. Depending on what you buy you could still end up spending more at different supermarkets, even if your delivery costs nothing.

5. Don't forget Click & Collect. A number of supermarkets offer Click & Collect services, where you order in advance and simply have to pick up the shopping, which is already bagged up and ready for you.
